The role of mechanical signals in the onset of human labour

A Randomised Controlled Trial of Laparoscopic Utero-sacral Nerve Ablation (LUNA) in Chronic Pelvic Pain

Dr Khalid Khan, Birmingham Women's Hospital - £149, 520 over 36 months

Chronic pelvic pain affects 4 in 100 women, about the same prevalence as asthma, and accounts for a fifth of all out patient gynaecological referrals. This costs millions in use of health care resources. The cause of the pain remains a mystery in half the cases, making treatment difficult. A purely symptomatic remedy is LUNA, laparascopic uterosacral nerve ablation, where nerves carrying pain impulses are cut. This study will make clear whether LUNA will alleviate pain and improve the quality of life of women with chronic pelvic pain.
