LAY TITLE: An investigation of different treatments for severe blood loss in women who have just given birth
Bleeding after childbirth may be extremely severe, and is the second most common cause of death directly due to pregnancy in women in the UK. However, women who die from bleeding represent only a small proportion of all women who suffer severe blood loss after giving birth.
The aim of this project is to use an existing maternity reporting system (UKOSS) to identify the number of women affected by severe bleeding after childbirth and treated with one of three specific therapies. The information will be analysed to investigate what characteristics of women or their infants impact on the severity of the condition, and how different treatments influence how severely women are affected by bleeding.
This information will be used to help develop guidelines for the most appropriate way to treat women who are affected by severe bleeding after giving birth.
