Endometrial regulation of endothelial cell gene expression and function in endometriosis.
Dr Cristin Print and Professor Stephen Smith, University of Cambridge £78,055 over 24 months (2000 - 2002 P1/00)

LAY TITLE: Is endometriosis caused by abnormal blood vessel growth?

Endometriosis is a very common gynaecological condition, which affects as many as one in ten women during their childbearing years. It can cause severe pain and may seriously affect a woman's lifestyle (women with the disease lose on average 45 days of work annually) as well as sometimes causing infertility.

Unfortunately effective surgical or medical treatments are not currently available. This is because the underlying cause of the disease remains unclear. This study seeks to define a novel view of the disease that is likely to improve surgical efficacy, and could lead to new medical treatments for the disease.
